Facebook bans images of women’s nipples on the site – regardless of whether they appear in art, political protest or breast-feeding. The effective result, even if it’s not the intent, is the conflation of all female nudity with pornography and the denial of women’s agency in defining for themselves how their bodies should be used, perceived and represented.

I want my heart

Happy international women’s day! There are sooooo many issues I could talk about in regards to women and there are so many great videos going around for today (check them out!!) but this has really been on my mind all day…
So I’ve been on a huge mad men kick lately and every time I watch the show, I can’t help but think how little has changed in terms of sexism. There is still so so so so much sexism in the workplace and last night we saw the episode where Betty Draper gets a psychiatrist for her daughter because Sally gets caught touching herself, and it’s like, man in 2014 there is still this huge stigma attached to female sexuality and masturbation and we still have a long way to go.
I remember in middle school, we had this sex ed teacher (although it wasn’t really a sex ed class) that everyone looked up to but her teachings were incredibly sexist. She taught us that women are supposed to be the “nesters” and men go out and get the jobs, and sooo much slut-shamy stuff like that whole “no one buys the cow if it’s giving the milk away for free” bullshit and I remember thinking there was something so wrong about what she was teaching, but I couldn’t figure it out because I was never exposed to feminism. But soooo many girls looked up to her, and it’s kind of scary to think that we have people lecturing false & damaging information to girls.
So moral of the story, speak up whenever you hear bullshit! Don’t be afraid to speak up to your teachers, don’t be afraid to question them. Because they aren’t always right. Take every opportunity to speak up. I’ve related soooooooo many essays and presentations to feminism/sexism and my presentations got other students to start a conversation. It’s the most empowering thing. So use your voice!! You really do have the power to influence and change the way people think.
the year is 2014 AD. the human race has existed for over 200,000 years. men still think women pee out of the vagina.
